Discussion Leading by Brea Spinelli and Luke Dumke

Amabelle is an orphan working for a family in the Dominican Republic. Throughout chapters 1-7 we discover that she has an intimate relationship with Sebastien Onuis. Like her he is also from Haiti and it is known that his parents died in a hurricane. He only comes to her at night and inturrupts her nightmares about her parents drowning. It is still unclear on whether or not he is real.

During her days so far she has helped birth Senora Valencia because the Doctor wasn't there on time when her water broke. It was a complete surprise to the family she works for because she was a midwife. She learned this as a child when her parents helped give deliveries. While Valencia was going through labor, it was another complete surprise that she had given birth to twins.

1. Why do you think the font is different and the chapters are whenever Amabelle is with Sebastien?

2. Do you think Sebastien is even a real character?
         - "There were many shadows, too, in the life I had beyond childhood. At times Sebastien Onius guarded me from the shadows. At other times he was one of them." (pg. 4)

3. Do the deaths of the characters' parents influence how they behave?
         - "A sweep of winds that destroyed so many houses and killed so many people bought him to me." (pg 25)
